Soutine, Chaim
(1894-1943)
   painter
Born in ghetto in Smilovitchi, Lithuania, the 10th child of a poor family, Chaim Soutine worked for a photographer and studied art in Minsk and Vilna, Russia (1910) before leaving for France. Arriving in Paris (1913), he frequented the Cormon Studio but soon left this academic environment for Ruche, where marc chagall and others already lived. During this period (1919-25) of great poverty, which Soutine saw as a necessary circumstance, he met dealers through Amadeo Modigliani who helped him sell many of the 200 canvases (usually landscapes) that he had painted, and he produced some series (Bœufs ecôrchés, Volailles plumées, Enfants de chœur). His style was based on a highly personal vision and technique, in which he sacrificed careful composition and drawing for a fervid intensity and the use of pigment in vivid and sometimes ugly colors, resulting in brutal psychological portraits or shocking still lifes. An expressionist painter, Soutine often reworked or destroyed his earlier paintings, while those that remain convey his inner turmoil.
